Abstract

Introduction: Life satisfaction (LS) and elderly people's mood are important variables for healthy aging. It is known that they are related to global social support, but the influence of different support domains has been little investigated. Objective: To understand the association between changes in LS and mood, as well as the association between changes in LS and mood with global social support and its domains (tangible; affective/positive social interaction; and emotional/information) in an elderly population. Method: Prospective study with 122 elderly individuals living in Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais, Brazil, who participated in the FIBRA-JF Study in 2009/2010 and 2018/2019. Results: All variables were associated with each other, except emotional/information support with mood change and tangible support with change in LS. Discussion: There is a need to create health intervention strategies that consider the influence of support domains on changes in LS and mood in older people. Conclusion: It is suggested that changes in LS in old age are associated with changes in the elderly's mood and the perception of social support.
