Mother-infant interaction can be influenced by factors such as prematurity and maternal mental health. This study described and correlated the development of preterm infants at three months of age, maternal behaviors in interaction with their infants and indicators of maternal postpartum depression. Twenty-three mother-infant dyads participated. The interaction was freely observed and coded using the Interadíade protocol. Mothers completed the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, and infant development was assessed using the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Infants showed performance within the expected range in fine motor development and expressive language, but below average in cognition, receptive language, and gross motor development. Mothers spent more time playing, observing, presenting objects, attracting their infants’ attention, and waiting for their responses. Clinical indicators of postpartum depression were identified in 43.5% of the sample. The maternal behavior of waiting was correlated with the receptive language, cognition, and fine motor development, being the one most related to infant development. No correlations were observed between postpartum depression and the investigated variables. The findings highlight the importance of promoting responsive maternal behaviors, such as waiting for the infant’s response, as a means to support the development of preterm infants.
