Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate sleep quality and its associations with sociodemographic and academic variables among health students. The sample consisted of 168 students. This is a quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional study. A sociodemographic questionnaire, items related to sleep hygiene, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI-PTBR) were used. The analysis revealed that the majority of participants had poor sleep quality, with more than 60% (n = 111) sleeping less than the recommended seven to nine hours. Anxiety was identified as the main factor associated with poor sleep quality. Students with employment had worse sleep scores compared to those who were not working, with p < 0.05 and Cohen’s d effect size = 0.51, indicating that work contributes to stress and reduces available sleep time. Although the difference between residents and non-residents was statistically significant, the practical impact was small (p > 0.05; Cohen’s d = 0.12). It is concluded that poor sleep quality among healthy students is prevalent and may be associated with anxiety and employment, highlighting the need for institutional and individual strategies to promote sleep health.
